L-R: Dan Deacon - Spiderman of the Rings, Bromst; Dinosaur Jr. - Dinosaur, Bug, Beyond, Farm.
this is one of the reasons I’m so surprised that Bromst managed to slip my mind (apart from it being a fantastic album, and being complemented with a superb live show, plus the recent video) is that it’s right beside Farm in my record collection. I had the idea that there were three LPs that I bought fairly early on in the year that were definite contenders for ‘best-of’ positions (Asobi Seksu’s Hush, Dan Deacon’s Bromst and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ It’s Blitz, I think now, in retrospect) so I cast my eye over the shelf before answering pgwp’s question. somehow I missed the Bromst for the sleeves.

2009—

pgwp:

[…]

So I ask you all… what is a 2009 album that has POSSESSED you? I’m talking highest criteria here—when it’s done playing you feel the urge to just start it over. I’m talking albums that you’ve had in rotation consistently for weeks and months on end. Albums that you will forever link to your life in 2009. Is that so much to ask?

Points deducted if you answer with an album that has not officially been released yet or has only been out for a week. I’m looking for records that have shed their new-car smell.

My answer has to be Dinosaur Jr., Farm. Not only did it in stay in heavy rotation on my turntable throughout the ‘new-car’ period, after soaking up the leaked mp3 version, but I’m now increasingly of the opinion that it’s better than Beyond, my #1 album of 2007. However, if I recall correctly, you weren’t a big fan of Dinosaur (though the new stuff does have different production values compared to the original output, with and without Barlow) so I should probably give some alternatives.

Woods, Songs of Shame is probably the most exciting new record that I’ve liked this year, although it’s really only a perfectly-shaped, accessible cap on an existing and fascinating back catalogue. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, It’s Blitz is I guess an indie reliable, but the synthy 80s feel is almost transcendentally good and makes for an exceptionally solid record. Finally, whenever I get around to ordering it from the band themselves, the fourth and final album from Shooting at Unarmed Men (Jon Chapple emeritus of Mclusky), With The Youthful Energy of A Zealot, will quite likely be superbly good - at least if last year’s Triptych is anything to go by.

Vinyl Sunday - Dinosaur Jr., Farm
from the archives - I took this while I was still listening to the album several times a day. it could do with some more focus (the photo, not the album).

I’d forgotten how cool this vinyl reissue looks (Bug is green, You’re Living All Over Me is red). it looks even better in real life, as its hard to capture it via photography. expect some better attempts on this Vinyl Sunday.

Dinosaur Jr. - ‘Bulbs of Passion’ from Dinosaur (1985)

“The new Dinosaur alb, and its glorious predecessor, are more emoin the mature sense of that haunted word - then anything since the original Homestead lp.” - The PrisonShip

Dinosaur Jr. - Farm - Was this close to deleting this because I’d skimmed it and I thought it sounded too emotional but listened to it for four songs today and realized it was awesome and I need to catch up on this band. It reminds me of Eyehategod in some way.

ahaha. ‘too emotional’? it probably is, but that’s mumblecore for you. J. Mascis bleeds (breathes?) feedback, and his tears are guitar riffs. Barlow’s the same, but in his own way.
