Boldypants - ‘Emotional Wreckingball’

A few words of explanation are required here. Chequerboard’s Penny Black, a combination of electronica and classical guitar on a sort of nostalgic Victorian kick, was one of the best albums from Ireland last year. Boldypants - what a great name - is the same guy with a heavier electronic sound. Listen to this one with headphones on.

Hooray for Humans - ‘Already Sleeping’ b/w ‘Hidden Hands’ (vinyl rip, two songs in one track)

Irish band who take their name from a Q and not U song. Fuzzy electro-pop done by a skilled guitar player with a great love of DC emo guitar-rock.

Whelan’s 20 year anniversary - On The Record blog
first time seeing Fight Like Apes, first time seeing any band at this stalwart of Dublin indie, for their double EP launch about a year previous: “anybody here know a band called Mclusky?” before playing this song

2. Ham Sandwich - ‘Sad Songs’ from Carry the Meek (2008)

I don’t know whether it’s my latent or not-so-latent emo sensibilities, but I absolutely adore the broad strokes of melody, quiet-to-loud dynamics and dual guitar heaviness of this otherwise conventional - but very good - Irish indie band from Kells. It’s like Texas is the Reason for Meath.
